Having attended last week's opening of Conor Harrington's Headless Heroes exhibition at Lazarides Rathbone Place gallery I couldn't recommend more that you stop by and check it out if you're in Central London. The mix of graffiti, abstract mark making and exquisitely rendered oil painting in its most traditional sense makes for a real feast in which you could quite pleasurably be lost.

SONG OF THE WEEK #14 / ALTERNATIVE CANDIDATE / DAVID BOWIE

-
Another great Bowie number but one I'd never heard until last week. A demo originally proposed for a musical Bowie was either writing in 1984 or wrote for a musical version of Orwell's "1984" but released as part of the 30th anniversary edition of the Diamond Dogs album.

SONG OF THE WEEK #11 / MOONAGE DAYDREAM / DAVID BOWIE

-
"David Live" is hands down one of my favourite live albums with a track list reading like a handful of diamonds. As difficult as it is to highlight one song from this astonishing album I've picked this track due to the very clear memory of a 16 year old me wondering for hours what a Pink Monkey Bird might look like. Amazing track.

SAVING BRITAIN'S PAST / BRICK LANE / BBC iPLAYER

-
Having spent a good few years of my twenties living on Hanbury St just off Brick Lane I found this recent documentary from the BBC fascinating. A very well paced exploration of the area's history and how it's core nature is now fundamentally changing. It's recent change being so rapid that even for someone who has been in the area for just a few years finds himself saying "Back when..."

SONG OF THE WEEK #10 / PARIS, TEXAS / RY COODER

-
Wim Wenders' "Paris, Texas" is one of my favourite films of all time and carries with it one of my favourite soundtracks. The film calmly crackles and oozes with atmosphere, all of which fills Ry Cooder's soundtrack to the brim. The two together bring with them one of those rare occasions where the soundtrack plays as much of a lead role as any of the films actors, an absolute joy to watch or just to listen to.

BECKS ART LABELS 2009 / OBSERVER MUSIC MONTHLY

-
Another nice surprise in the weekend papers - my reworking of the Smith's "The Queen is Dead" was featured in this weeks Observer Music Monthly.
-
"Less direct, though equally as dazzling, is Hellovon's image for The Queen is Dead. Where the original featured french actor, Alain Delon, the remake underscores the Smiths' essential Britishness , featuring as it does a Union Jack-painted butterly, "the essence of an album," says Hellovon,"that is funny, ferocious and heartbreaking."

SONG OF THE WEEK #8 / GROUND AS COMMON AS GOLD / MICE PARADE

Mice Parade's 2005 release "Bem-Vinda Vontade" is one of my favourite records of all time and as such I could have picked any of it's nine songs to highlight. -
Dirty Projectors have to be one of the most exciting and dynamic live acts I've seen in the past few years. I was totally blown away when they supported Beirut a couple of years ago but a little disappointed when the live act didn't really translate onto record with their debut. The lovely Wallaper* Magazine has just put live their Polaroid Project which hails in the much missed instant format film going back on sale thanks to a very savvy move from Urban Outfitters.
-
"In celebration of this new generation, we bagged ten cameras before they hit the shelves and passed them on to ten of our favourite, pioneering creatives and asked them to shoot one film each of whatever they chose. SONG OF THE WEEK #5 / VACUUM / GANG GANG DANCE

-
Having spent the weekend in the startlingly beautiful Brecon Beacons at The Green Man Festival it seemed only right to pick a song from one of the bands we watched there.
-
Until their early evening set on Friday I had heard very little of Gang Gang Dance. The reason I wanted to highlight them is because there's nothing better than a band you don't know totally grabbing you with their performance out of the blue. Definitely one of the stand out sets of the weekend.

SONG OF THE WEEK #4 / RADIOHEAD / TALK SHOW HOST

-
I heard Radiohead's "Talk Show Host" again this morning for the first time in years and was instantly transported back to being 16 listening to the "Street Spirit" singles with a friend and being blown away by the song. SONG OF THE WEEK #3 / I KNOW ITS OVER / JEFF BUCKLEY

-
Unreleased until 2007, Buckley's cover of the Smith's seminal "I Know its Over", from "The Queen is Dead" album, strips the song down to it's bare bones then showers it with intimacy.
-
Over the years of listening to Buckley's music I had only ever heard the verse from I Know its Over seamlessly weaved into a medley of Cohen's "Hallejujah." To now hear it in full is something else.
-
For anyone unfamiliar with Buckley's "Live At Sin-é" album I couldn't recommend it enough - a showcase of virtuosity so transparent at times it is completely staggering.

TROUVELOT / ASTRONOMICAL DRAWINGS MANUAL

-
"Étienne Léopold Trouvelot (1827–1895) was a French artist, astronomer and amateur entomologist. (Curiously, he is most noted for the unfortunate introduction of the Gypsy Moth into North America.)
His drawings of celestial phenomena were so good that the Director of Harvard College Observatory put Trouvelot on staff where he gained access to their powerful telescope. He would go on to produce some 7000 astronomical drawings and publish 50 scientific papers." (Via But Does it Float)

ANTHONY BURRILL / IN A NEW PLACE / KEMISTRY GALLERY

-
Anthony Burrill seems to be exhibiting in galleries more and more of late, the last being in Colette Paris. Tonight's opening at East London staple Kemistry Gallery, Burill's first London show since his fantastic collaboration with Michael Marriot at The Biscuit Building in January, showcases a selection of huge laser-cut perspex pieces alongside small run giclee prints in custom built perspex frames.
-
It is the translation from the flat letterpress work, for which Burrill became so renowned, into large three dimensional installations that really interests me most about his exhibitions. My favourite to date being the huge architectural collaboration with Michael Marriot from the show "The Right Kind of Wrong" which you can see here.
-
With prices from £3 for an "In an New Place" card pack to £4,200 for the super-sized mirrored laser-cut pieces there's something for everyone - a show well worth a look if you are graphically inclined.

BECKS ART LABELS 2009 / REVEALED

Today the Becks Art Labels 2009 have been revealed officially on Flickr. Over the years the Beck’s bottle has been the canvas for art heavyweights such as Gilbert & George, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, and Jake & Dino Chapman to name but a few. This year's commissioned collection is on the theme of "Music Inspired Art."
-
For the project artists were asked to re-imagine the covers from some of the most iconic albums from the past four decades, using the music as inspiration. The cover I reworked was The Smiths "The Queen is Dead."

Fellow contributors include Si Scott, Kate Moross and Kid Acne among others. An exhibition is to follow later this Summer when the limited edition bottles are released.

THONET / MUJI / IRVINE & GRCIC

-
It's great to see the subject of a Frame Magazine article in which I was so engrossed ("A Perfect Match" by Petra Schmidt, May/Jun 2009 Issue) hit the streets this month in the form of Muji's collaboration with design stars James Irvine & Konstantin Grcic and legendary German manufacturer Thonet.
-
James Irvine's reworking of the original Viennese Coffeehouse Chair No14 designed by Michael Thonet in 1858 is my personal favourite from the series (pictured above). A retail price of £215 may not put this piece of classic design into as many hands as we might have hoped for but the integrity of the whole collaboration, with it's focus on craft, quality and attention to detail, is a really encouraging move from a multi-national.

ASTRAL WEEKS

-
Whilst working on a new piece for an upcoming show in LA I have been listening to Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks" repeatedly. It's an album I fell in love with instantly 8 or so years ago and is among a small stable of albums that never fail to inspire me.
-
I then read today that it was originally released in November 1968. I am well aware this album is widely considered a classic but with a culture so fixated with speed and the new trend it pleases me beyond belief that something nearly 41 years old remains quite so outstanding.

INFO
Electric Blue Gallery welcomes in May with a solo show entitled Cocoon from London based illustrator and artist Von.
With Cocoon comes a small oasis in London's busy East End where you are invited to find refuge, sit on the grass and surround yourself with Summer, zebras and birds - executed, as always, with Von's own inimitable abstraction. Cocoon is the next development in the artist's ongoing Animal Series of drawings which has previously been published as part of Creative Review's award winning Monograph series, travelled on billboards from London to New York in the Migration exhibition, adopted by Liberty of London for their relaunch and appeared on the catwalk at Milan Fashion Week as part of the Trussardi A/W 09 collection.
Whilst on the surface this ongoing collection of drawings is a simple exploration of beauty found in the animal kingdom it is also an indepth examination in image construction, form and the process of drawing itself.

EMILY FORGOT AT SELFRIDGES

-
The wonderful Emily Forgot was commissioned to produce a four window installation for the prestigious Selfridges. The result, suitably named "Zoot Allure," has been a huge success and is, along with her Creative Review front cover in March, a clear indication that we will be seeing a lot more from this designer and illustrator in the future and deservedly so.
-
You can see the installation for yourself on the Orchard Street side of the Oxford Street Selfridges until the end of April.

FLEET FOXES

-
A friend of mine turned my on to the Seattle based band Fleet Foxes today and I had to spread the word. A mix of Crosby and Nash, The Shins and Arcade Fire of sorts that comes highly recommended with nice cover work to boot.
