I came across an article on the 99% site today via friend Sabine Zettler about the increasing loss of sacred, personal space away from distraction, especially the technical kind. Nothing new I know but this resonated with me particularly at the moment as I'm struggling after the break to find my routine again this year that facilitates those moments of real focus / concentration. It also reminded me of the song "Virginia" off the DRC Music album that came out towards the end of last year (above). It seems to embody that sense of calm found in those moments. Anyway, I thought you may enjoy one / both.

I'm extremely pleased to announce the short film by Andrew Telling which debuted last month at the launch of the Semblance Collector's Edition Box Set is now online. The version above is a bit on the small side so I'd recommend hitting the Full-Screen button. It documents both work from the Semblance series and the triptych billboard installation at the Truman Brewery in London done to coincide with the event. Andrew shot, edited and scored the film which you can watch in it's entirety above.

I must also say a massive thanks to Richard Mills and Melvin Galapon for helping me install the boards, Andrew Telling for doing such a fantastic job on the film and score and of course the Truman Brewery for being instrumental in making the whole thing happen.

RANKIN | THE HUNGER MAGAZINE

20 years after co-founding Dazed & Confused, last week the first issue of photographer and publisher Rankin's new magazine The Hunger was released. I was asked to collaborate with Rankin on a series of 10 portraits for the launch issue. I was also photographed by the man himself and interviewed for a feature in the mag. Definitely a unique experience going through the whole wardrobe and styling process - especially as I had no idea I was going to be actually filmed for the interview.

Creative Review kindly featured a good chunk of the portraits last week. You can also see some behind the scenes shots of the day I went in for the shoot on the Occupy Blog.

There's a whole host of interviews and short films from the worlds of art, film and fashion on The Hunger Mag's site for you to feast your eyes on and, of course, you can get the magazine itself in all good newsagents now. I'll update my site with the full set of images when it relaunches in the new year. In the mean time I'm looking forward to working again with Rankin on the second issue due out next year.

It was a packed house bringing as the show does something for everyone from a diverse stable of artists such as Charming Baker, Polly Morgan, Sir Peter Blake, Kai & Sunny, Emily Forgot and Erin Petson among many others. So the line-up of speakers for next year's OFFSET Creative Festival in Dublin have been announced. I am genuinely excited by the roster containing as it does Eike from Hort, Stefan Sagmeister, Friends With You, Rinzen, Conor Harrington, Seymour Chwast, Paula Sher and Shepard Fairey among others. There's going to be a lot of people whose work I genuinely love and admire.

That excitement is equally matched by a slight sense of nerves as I too will be taking to the stage for an hour at the three day event next March. I set up studio HelloVon in 2006. This is the first major talk I'll have given since it's inception.

First off we thought the main stage was an odd place to put James Blake, especially considering the MOR stuff he shared the billing with, but all fears of it being a "bit quiet" were soon dispelled. Bass that shook your chest and an amazing set displaying the fine art of restraint. A real highlight of the festival.

I wanted to post a few things we stumbled across that I really liked whilst in LA. This being a beautiful little book shop come gallery which was floor to ceiling with eye candy on Fairfax Avenue called "Family." We could have spent a lot longer in there but the sunshine called and I escaped with a nifty Parra book I'd not seen elsewhere. I recommend the Fairfax Village to anyone visiting - some nice galleries, shops and huge thrift stores full of the obscure. It felt more NY to than LA which made a nice change too.

This weeks episode opens with a hushed monologue about Bruce Lee repeatedly kicking Jarvis in the face in response to his making a comment about Lee's Gap combat trouser sponsorship deal forced upon him by his manager. Fear not, Jarvis kicks a small dog onto Bruce Lee's face and makes it through a trapdoor on a glass stage to play the gig. This show alone was worth saving 6Music for.

NEW SHOW - GHOSTS OF GONE BIRDS

The next show I'll be exhibiting in is quite a special one, and one I'm honored to be part of. "Ghosts of Gone Birds" has been masterminded by director Ceri Levy with an impressive list of artists under it's belt including Sir Peter Blake, Jamie Hewlett, Billy Childish, Polly Morgan, Marcus Coates, Colin Self, D-Face and Kai & Sunny among others "all creating their own particularly unique artistic memorials to the birds we have lost over the last two centuries."

The first installment opens May 19th at Liverpool School of Art before it travels abroad with a pit stop in London in November this year. Not only will the exhibition show artwork generated by those mentioned above it will incorporate a programme of talks, film and live music all of which will raise money and awareness for BirdLife International's Preventing Extinctions programme.

For the show I've created a new, large scale original but all details of artworks are very much under wraps until the exhibition launches later this month. For full details on Ghosts of Gone Birds click the link below to go to their regularly updated Facebook page.

I've just come back from my first trip to Copenhagen and loved it. We really didn't know an awful lot about the place not having had any time to do much research beforehand. Amongst the few very handy tips I did receive was a link to a site called "Spotted By Locals" with the tag line "experience cities like a local."

Pretty self explanatory in the service it provides - city guides (both on web and iPhone app) focusing on good value rather than luxury of the best spots according to locals that reside there. The app for Copenhagen, which included a scrollable map displaying all hints & tips by category completely accessible offline, proved completely invaluable and went a long way to making our trip as enjoyable as it was.

If you find yourself abroad in a European city its likely there's an app from Spotted By ready to offer up a solid list of great places to eat, drink, shop and see. A total bargain in my opinion.

BOOK - JUST KIDS

Reading whilst traveling is a real pleasure for me, with each particular book locking in a ton of memories from each trip. As I'm about to set off again I thought I'd recommend the last book I read when I was away - "Just Kids" by Patti Smith. If you're a fan or Patti Smith or Robert Mapplethorpe its a cert you'll enjoy this but aside from it's obvious target fan market it makes for a genuinely interesting and intimate glimpse into a burgeoning scene in 60's/70's New York and the respective careers of Smith and Mapplethorpe. It does such a job on saturating the Chelsea Hotel with such prestige and history that I'm dead set on staying the next time I'm in town despite the inevitable disappointment of it having changed completely. Fantastic stuff.

Last Thursday saw the incredibly busy launch of Nokia Pure - a new font designed by Dalton Maag. To celebrate this Nokia's branding and communications agency DesignStudio commissioned "some of the world’s leading designers and design agencies in order to obtain a collection of outstanding and innovative work" which was exhibited at The Tramshed on Rivington St, London.

I had the good fortune to exhibit alongside Alex Trochut, Bond, Build, Cartlidge Levene, DesignStudio, Non-Format, North, Practise, Studio Myerscough, Value and Service and Z.A.K. Each of us created an A1 print in edition of 20 interpreting the font in our own ways. All profits go to the British Dyslexia Association (BDA) for which, according to Creative Review, the launch raised over £3,000. Now all pieces are available to purchase online via the link below.

Over the last few days I've been putting the finishing touches to my piece for a group exhibition of alternative invites to the forthcoming royal wedding. It should be a great event with some great exhibitors such as Jesse Auerosalo, Melvin Galapon, Craig Ward, Village Green and Si Scott among others. The organisers assure us that there'll be "25 individual pieces, a wedding cake, an organ duo and brilliant bespoke bunting." Artwork will also be silent auctioned off for charities chosen by the respective artists.

I first came across Elvis & Kresse during London Design Week last year and was immediately taken with their simple but beautifully made over night bag (above) made from decommissioned British fire hose and lined with military grade parachute silk. In the end I was far less adventurous and bought a double card holder for my Oyster - way more boring but cherished none the less. Perhaps if I ever become a little more jet set I'll go for the bag. Whilst not so much a fan of the multi-coloured / non-fire hose products you can peruse and purchase all their goods online at the Elvis & Kresse site.
